My speakers sound flat
Flat, lifeless sound almost always comes down to an EQ setting somewhere in your signal chain. Work through the gear one piece at a time and you'll usually find it fast.
Check the EQ on every device in the chain
Start with a clean baseline, then adjust to taste:
- If your powered speaker has an onboard EQ, make sure the levels are set the way you want them and nothing is cut too far.
- If you're running a mixer or a controller, check the EQ on those units too. A low band pulled down on the mixer will thin out the sound just as much as one on the speaker.
Set a neutral starting point
Set the high, mid, and low bands to about 50% each, then listen. From there, bring up whatever the sound is missing until it feels balanced for the room and the music you're playing.
